Lenovo 29595DU Review by xrayhearing
This was a relatively sound choice for a netbook when it was first released. The 12" form factor means that typing and touchpad are comfortable (i.e., the keyboard and touchpad are normal sizes for laptops). The computer is light and fairly sturdy. I bought this a year ago, and there are obviously cheaper, better options now (actually, I bought the 1GB Ram, Via Nano, 160GB hard drive model). The model listed here is newer and a bit more powerful, but there are probably better options out there for 12" form-factor netbooks.
The computer, with a few minor tweaks, runs fairly well. I'm far from being a computer expert, but most of these things were a pretty easy way to get the most out of this cheap netbook:
1) Lenovo/IBM, like most other PC manufacturers, sells their products preloaded with a lot of bloatware that is unnecessary. Removing these programs and all the superfluous startup programs made a big difference in the computer speed.
2) The S12 also comes with a second partition on the hard drive (as a backup drive), but I found this to be useless and just reformatted the whole computer (be careful if you are reformatting - there's no OS disc included in the package!).
3) I added another 2gb of memory (very easy to do with the S12 model), which cost about $20 and significantly improved the speed of the S12. This is sort of an essential upgrade for any low-memory netbook.
I generally use the netbook for fairly common tasks (i.e., MS Office, browsing, Netflix video, some light gaming (e.g., World of Goo, some RPGs from the early 2000s). I also run some more demanding text processing software and statistical analysis software on this machine, and have never had any problems with it locking up. I don't run Photoshop on this laptop, but Gimp runs just fine.
My only criticisms of this laptop are that 1) the battery life is rather poor, even on low power settings (I have the Via Nano model, which is reported to be a bit faster than the Atom model, but also sucks the battery life faster). Also the battery seems to be deteriorating after a year of use or so.
2) Also, the S12 can't really handle very serious video. This thing struggles to render video in higher resolutions, and Hulu comes across like stop-motion photography (Netflix, on the other hand, which scales itself to your connection and computer, works flawlessly).
3) My final criticism is the wireless: The card only does up to G, no N...which makes it a bit limited in some ways.
Also, it's not a big deal for me, but the webcam on this laptop is awful, as others have observed. Running Skype on this machine is very choppy (not a system resources thing, apparently - rather, a webcam issue).

The display of the S12 is marvelous, so crispy!
I use it to browse internet, word processing and watch online stream movies.
Never experience difficulties, it fits my requirement. so no complains.
Lenovo 29595DU Review by Anna
I've had this laptop for longer than a year. Things I love about it are the keyboard, the screen is very nice, the sd card slot, and it doesn't look cheap -- it looks very stylish. It's very fun to use.
The only drawbacks to this computer would be the crappy webcam, the fact that it is a pretty slow computer. But I also am running photoshop, and a bunch of applications on it at the same time, and I can notice only some lag.
I used this as a desktop replacement for a year and I think that for the price it's a great buy. It is kinda heavy, so depends on what you mean when you ask for portability. I like this laptop because I can bang it up and drag it with me everywhere I go and not feel sad about it because it would be easy to replacement. I just really love the screen though and the way it displays pictures beautifully, almost uniquely. I would buy another one DEFINITELy if this one died or crashed. But I hope they come up with a faster, thinner version by then!
